Recently we had a mouse decide he would like to live in our house. Being nice people, we decided to try a humane mouse trap – and unbelievably it actually worked!
We used the The Mice Cube (Click Here) and were pretty happy with it.
Here’s a picture of our scared and trapped but not dead mouse:

The mouse is kind of cute for being a rodent, don’t you think? The lighting is terrible since we wanted to hurry up and get him out of that box, but this picture is proof that the humane mouse trap really works.
We have never had a mouse in this house before (though in older, draftier houses I have!) and so when we spotted him hanging out in the basement I knew we had to get rid of him before he found his way into the kitchen. The thought of finding a dead mouse and having to dispose of it was almost worse than the thought of him moving in as new tenant. And with little kids, the thought of setting up traps to kill the mouse didn’t seem like a very safe option, since kids like to get into everything!
And so began our quest for the humane mouse trap. We started looking at local garden supply stores. They had smaller live catch traps, but they had spring loaded doors and I was afraid the kids would still figure out a way to somehow get hurt on them. Nobody else really sold anything that was what we were looking for – when we told people we wanted a humane mouse trap they thought we were crazy. We even stopped at Pet Smart thinking maybe they would have something in case your pet mouse escaped and you needed to catch it. They are not as animal friendly as you’d think, especially since they sell pet mice – the sales clerk told us to just kill it. Can you believe that?
Naturally, Amazon sells everything you could possibly need, and not surprisingly we found one humane mouse trap that looked promising: The Mice Cube.

It’s a teeny tiny little box (much smaller than I expected it to be!) and basically once the mouse pushes its way into the box it cannot get out until you open the door for it. The trick supposedly (it worked for us at least) is to spread a little peanut butter on the door and wipe it off to get the mouse interested in going inside where you leave a little snack for it.
So, we ordered our humane mouse trap with expedited shipping (I wanted this mouse gone fast!) and as soon as it arrived, stuck in our basement with a snack for the mouse to eat inside. It took another day before we finally saw any progress, but sure enough I went down to our basement and could see/hear the box rattling! We caught our mouse!
It was so nice because we did not have to touch the mouse at all – my hubby released him outside where he belongs. When he was done we washed the mouse trap out with water and bleach to disinfect it.
I don’t anticipate or hope that we will ever need to use our humane mouse trap again, but it is from now on the only way I will ever try to get rid of a mouse in my house. Everybody should start using these humane mouse traps! And ideally, but it before you need it so you don’t have to wait two days for it to be shipped to your house!

Thanks for the tip on the humane mouse trap. I have tried some one of these before but it was not very successful. The mouse got into almost every sack of rice and grain before the cat finally had a midnight snack.
I would feel much better letting the little critter continue his life outside instead of inside the cat.

Wow. I think my mom would like this. She hates killing up bloody rats all the time.
Really it is nice tip and thanks for sharing it.
Ha, this is far more easier than the mouse catching technique I used the other month. This basically involved sitting still for hours at a time until I saw the mouse scurrying across my living room floor, then scrambling after it with a giant pot. It took about six attempts before I finally trapped it. However, getting it out of the house was a whole other story altogether!

This is soooo gross. I’ll tell you mice make me really nauseous. I’m glad you’re humane.
My take is as long as the mice are very far from me I’m ok.
I agree that this is a much cleaner way of getting rid of mice. Once we had a mouse curl up and die underneath our huge water tank. Needless to say it was the grossest thing on planet Earth since when we finally got it out it was maggot infested.
So I guess this would prevent that kind of situation.
All the best,
Eren

It seems like so much work. The easier way is to put a kind of bridge between the floor and a bucket. Next you put some cottage cheese on the other end of the “bridge”. Once the mouse steps on it it’ll tip down throwing the rodent into the bucket. Here – I just saved you couple dollars and some time
.
Thanks for the tip on the mouse trap. Our mouse trap (our cat) died this past fall.
Since we are not ready to replace her we will need to find another solution – this trap just may do it.

[...] A Humane Mouse Trap: Bye Bye Mouse! [...]
This is a great idea, and Amazon is great and they do have everything. This is nice to have a way to get mice out and not have to worry about pets and children. I have a little 1 year old and a dog, so getting mice out is always a trick because I do not want either the dog or the baby to get hurt. I will try this. Thanks
Thanks, I’ll keep it in mind. I don’t particularly have anything against rodents, but my wife can’t stand them! Anyhow you really don’t want them inside the house or they can make a terrible mess, eating holes in just about anything.
Now you’ve just gotta hope that your mouse didn’t leave his wallet lying in your basement and come back looking for it!

The thing I really can’t stand about mouse traps is having to touch them to get the body out. This will fix that since they can run out on their own when we find a place to let them go.

I used a similar mouse trap. Now I don’t use one because our cat will do the job.
Thanks for this! Although in our place.. there are more of RATS than mouse hahaa!

This mouse trap is far more better than many other methods of catching a mouse. It is also environment friendly.

A mouse trap. How nice it is. But what will you do after the successful entrapment?

I once found i little mouse in my house. Too bad i have some cats too. The little rodent last just a minute. One of my cats grabbed it and ran out of the window. That was the end of the one and only mouse that has appeared in my house.
I’ve used a humane mouse trap myself. It did work…until the dog found it.

sorry to say it, but your mouse is going to come back again. they travel a long way (miles?) to get home. the only way to get rid is to make sure whatever it was after (food/water/shelter) is no longer there for it.

I never had much luck with the humane mouse traps, but it has been a while since I had to use them. Here is to hoping I don’t need to again!
I used to have a cat that would find mice in the middle of the night and then bring them into the house via the pet door. They would be alive and unharmed. She just wanted to chase them in the comfort and warmth of the house. This, of course, would wake up the dog who proceeded to make a ruckus and then the whole house was awake.
Update: So far, so good! The mouse did not come back…though we did find out that our cute mouse in the picture there must be a SHE because we caught about 8 baby mice with them afterward! But they don’t come back, and it’s amazing how simple this little thing is to get rid of them. Thanks for all the comments everyone!
Those babies were probably looking for their mom. Mice have a really good sense of smell and can tell where other mice have been. At least you got rid of them without having to kill them. I didn’t think those humane traps worked very good.
i don’t know why, but humane mouse traps never worked well with so i got a sticky.
How extremely nice of you. My mom use to light the rat on fire, or drown it. Creeps me out still ..
Thanks for the share. Didn’t know that greenhouse-theory can be applied to catch mouses
. Meanwhile this can help I guess

Such a simple idea and glad to see it worked for you. I know they are vermin, but that doesn’t mean we should kill them just because they find their way into our homes. Pleased to see there are kind folk in the world who actually think about these things before just putting down rat pellets or snap-traps.
