I am sure by now you have seen automatic faucets in a public restroom or other public place with running water near you. Basically, the faucet has no handles…it is operated by a sensor that detects your motion by your hands and it will automagically turn on by the movement.
This is what one looks like, in case you haven’t seen them:

In theory, it is supposed to save billions of dollars worldwide in water costs, not to mention help conserve water.
And it’s quite possible that maybe these automatic faucets do indeed save a lot of water. After all, every time I try to use one to wash my hands, guess what? No water comes out of it. Unless, of course, I drop my purse or something else I don’t want to get all wet. Sure, then it will work quite well and completely soaking everything in its path.
It’s not that I’m against conserving water or anything like that. But it aggravates the heck out of me when I have to stand there for five minutes waving my hands around like an idiot to get water to come out.
So, the automatic faucet belongs in the stupid invention category
I have seen it before it is great step to save water because at public place some times people dont bother to turn off the tab. Water is very crucial resource we should save it.

Well, maybe they save water, but whenever I’ve used them the darn things blast out water at a much faster rate than I would turn on, and keep going long after I would have turned it off, if I could have!

I thought the purpose of these was to reduce the spread of germs from touch!
I know what you are saying though, I’m yet to come across one that works nearly as well as it should.

I hate these automatic bathrooms with the exception of the auto urinals those should be manditory in every public bathroom.
The worst on though is the auto paper towel dispensers, those never work.

I’ve tried to perfect squeezing my purse between my knees while waving one hand wildly in front of the sensor with the other posed under the faucet to catch the 10 seconds of spray. I’m good enough at it that there’s only a 10% chance I will dump my stuff on the filthy floor.
I think these were made for the same reason that automatic flushers were invented: you know, the ones that go off and splash your ass with toilet water if you don’t get up fast enough. People are pigs and don’t flush after themselves, let alone clean up after squatting and strafing the bowl and seat with urine.
These same people cannot be trusted to turn off a faucet either. They’ve screwed it up for the rest of us.

ya i accept this it should be mandatory in public restrooms

I agree these things are annoying, but if they stop one joker from leaving a tap pouring litre after litre, then I’m happy for the troubles
I have always had a lot of trouble with these too. Sometimes I’ll stand there for a full minute or two trying to get the water to come out and looking around at how everyone else doesn’t seem to be having any trouble with it. It makes me feel silly, but I do appreciate that these things save water and reduce the transmission of germs.

And then, to top it off, you use the automatic hand dryer that blows the water all over your trousers making it look like you’ve wet yourself. Then comes the walk of shame out of the public toilets at which point everyone can see your soaking crotch! Nice
This technology leaves a little to be desired. I personally like the “no flush urinals”. Now there is an invention that is ahead if its time.
I love these faucets! But I do admit…I also feel like an idiot waving my hands around. These faucets always seem to have such a nice semi-warm temperature though. I like the the stupid faucets

These never work right!! I feel stupid standing there waving my hands around trying to get one to come on so that I can wash. At least the auto flushing toilets have a backup button you can use when they do not work.

I’ve used those faucets many times and it never happened to me. The water was always flowing properly. I would also say that faucets without handles are good for Your health. Do You know how many bacteries from other people hands are getting in there? A lot. And thanks to faucets devoided of handles You don’t have to get other people dirt
It is interesting that the criticisms are levied against the technology but shouldn’t it be targeted at those who are responsible for adjusting the settings?
Haha. Great to see the reasoning behind these. Got some problems getting them to work myself. They vary in quality tho.. Some are like off if your hands are not 100% still right on the laser :S
i think this is a good way of saving water becoming idiot for one time is not a heavy cost
lol, tech has its drawbacks too, i’ve read same thing used in reservoir, but we should understand it saves man work and moneys, a sensor can work more efficiently and diligently than a man can do.

That’s funny. Of course you could always use the automatic hand dryer!!!
Those things are everywhere in Las Vegas (they do save a lot of water).

Another way to look it these faucets and others that are sensor driven is; you can cut down on contamination or passing/receiving germs from the handles in public settings. I prefer the Sensa system at home since I know where my hands have been and the elegant look is very appealing. Try one at home and you will wonder why you never had one before.
I agree! There is a restaurant around the corner from our house that has automatic faucets and an automatic hand dryer. The faucets work half the time and the hand dryer never works and they never have paper towels. Very frustrating!
I hate those things. I jump from one faucet to the next thinking this one’s broken. I’m sure they conserve water alright but they probably help to spread disease too. LOL.
