A sign that you are getting to be old is that the Classic rock and Oldies radio stations have started playing songs you remember being new in high school.
Another sign that you are getting older is that you go to see what concert tickets are available in your area and you either don’t recognize who any of the performers are or you think to yourself “Wow! They’re still going at it?”
Here are some of the bands I noticed that I can’t believe are still touring:
Fleetwood Mac: I love Fleetwood Mac! But they’ve been going at it since 1967…more than 40 years now!
Chicago: Another band still in it 40 some years later, though ironically the band doesn’t have any of its original members.
Queensryche: They’ve been together for 27 years, and yet I can only think of a handful of people I know that would know who they are and probably less people than that who would be up for still seeing them live. (Unless maybe younger kids are getting into them now?)
Phish: I saw Phish live about 8 years ago. I don’t know why this one surprised me, but it did. I hadn’t thought about them or seen if they’ve had any new albums or songs since about 2001.
Reel Big Fish: Notably one of the worst bands of the late 90′s that I remember, how the heck are they still on tour and people still showing up to watch them?
The Eagles: They take their song lyrics “You can check out anytime you’d like, but you can never leave!” literally apparently.
The Pretenders: Another band I love, but can’t believe is still putting on shows over 30 years since they first started. Chrissie Hynde just had her 57th birthday last September!
It’s really amazing that these bands are still going at it. Such determination. Such a passion for their music. And if I take Stevie Nicks out to eat, we can save 10% off the bill thanks to the senior citizens discount!
Next time you or someone you know starts complaining about getting old, go grab yourself some concert tickets and remember if Stevie Nicks can still do it, so can you.
I was thinking of Journey, but then they do have that new vocalist, Arnel Pineda, so touring makes sense. I do love that band’s music though.

I love the songs of The Pretenders, and I had no idea they are still touring! It’s funny how some of the bands performs for SO many years (40 years – Wow). I liked the quote from the Eagles… Thanks.
I have a problem with bands like the rolling stones and other ancient bands, i don’t mind that they want more money, but they look like skeletons on stage, and they music just isn’t that good anymore, thats how you know when to hang it up. I think bands like queensryche and other metal bands go to Europe and are huge over there which can keep them going even if everyone forgets about them here in the US.
The Rolling Stones need to give up the ghost already, Jagger looks ridiculous these days. Yet they sell out every concert.
I think it is great that there are still some bands out there that can keep people coming to their concerts. I’m sure that we won’t see too many of the new bands of today in 40 years from now.

At least the Rolling Stones did some good songs once upon a time. Much more than can be said for Reel Big Fish.

All these bands still want or need money. That is the only reason they are still going in my opinion.
40 years for Fleetwood Mac is just crazy. These bands should quit at their peak leave on a high note.

I saw the Eagles last year and am going back this year – I think there great (along with many of the other bands you mention). People always comment on how old they are but as long as there are filling arenas I don’t see a reason why they should stop.
How about Aerosmith aren’t they still touring? , Journey and Def Leppard also are some old school bands.

Saw Procul Harem playing live on the TV last week. All white haired, apart from youngish guitar player, obviously recently imported. Decided they were playing all their hits at a slower tempo than I remembered, so they are obviously slowing down as they get older!

Great article. I really enjoy reading your posts. Keep up the great work.
The pretenders and fleetwood mac still are great in concert. Some groups will always put on a good show. The eagles still sound great also.
All the older music sounds better then anything that is coming out in this day of age. Long live Dave Matthews.
reel big fish is amazing
