I’ve decided today to officially declare that I hate my vacuum. I have one of the Bissell upright canister vacs. It’s supposed to be super powerful, easy to clean, yadda yadda yadda – don’t believe a word of it.
In reality, it doesn’t pick up anything really. So many times I vacuum the entire house only to realize an hour later some of the crumbs that made me decide I needed to vacuum in the first place were still there.
Part of the problem with this vacuum is that there are three million filters to clean out each single time you want to use it, assuming you are using it to actually pick stuff up from the floor. I am just too lazy for that.
Thinking back to the old days where vacuum salesmen used to come back to the house with their slicked back hair, shiny shoes, and suits and would dump a pot of dirt on a carpet sample, I wondered how my vacuum would hold up to the test. I didn’t want to use dirt though, so I thought I would try baby powder, because at least it smells nice if I couldn’t get it out.
Sure enough, it didn’t pick up any of it. Thank goodness for my shop vac! Cleaning an entire house with a shop vac though is a bit back-breaking, and not something I’d want to do on a regular basis. I could probably replace all the filters and belts in the vacuum I have now, but I’m sure that would cost a good $50 – money that could go towards a new, better, sucking vacuum that won’t have me swearing at it again in 3 months.
I saw this entire blog about the Miele canister vacuum, and it looks pretty sweet – cheaper than a Dyson and slightly better than the Kenmore I’ve heard good things about…but then again I see it has all those stupid filters…
I need your help everybody, I need a vacuum that sucks! Any suggestions? What kind of vacuum do you have? Do you like it?
I think Hoover is pretty good. You should try it out.
I can’t say that I have any recommendations, but I have certainly experienced vacuums that suck…or I guess I should say don’t suck. I too have heard good things about miele products in general, but have always secretly wanted a Dyson…they just look cool, but could be form over function.

I run a martial arts school which makes me somewhat of an expert on vacuums. I think I’ve been through them all. We vacuum 4000 sq ft every day and go through vacuums really fast. I’ve gone through all the bagless variety and have come back to good ole throw the bag out vacuums.
the vacuum I reccommend is called Simplicity. It’s a bag vacuum but high end. It breaks occassionally but I’m always able to fix it. totally outlasted and outworked every other vacuum we’ve used.
We actually keep several vacuums on hand. Pick them up at the second hand store and when they die I throw them out. The other suggestion are the cheaper bag vacuums. Just throw them out when then die and buy another at 50 bucks or so. Not landfill friendly but that’s what i would do if I didn’t have my simplicity.

Personally I would go for hiring someone that would do the cleaning for me.

I would like to reccomend the product of Hoover as well. I think it is great!
As infomercially as it sounds, try one of the Orecks. Super strong motors, and from all the hotels that use them around here, they must really hold up.
I would also suggest you find a local janitorial supply store and see what makes/models they carry. Just about what ever they have will be top notch. Otherwise, they’d be out of business from selling junk to the pros.

I have personal experience with the Oreck – awesome vac…they really do work well.
If you want a “slicky” sales guy at your door again, give Kirby a call …
(they are good vacs though)

This is the problem with most vacuums. They don’t clean realy good. Kirby is way to expensive of course (for most of the people), but you can do it the old way: hit the carpet outside, and all the dirt will go out. Good luck!
So it couldn’t even pick up the powder? Man, that does suck. Can’t quite recommend any machine though. But good luck with the vacuum hunt.

Sucks to hear that about the Kirby. The only bad salesmen I’ve seen around here are the ones selling the Rainbow vacuums. The high pressure is really tough to deal with.

I’ve been using Zanussi for a year now, cheap and powerfull, sucks in stones and coins
That is a very common problem with most vacuum and it makes me feel sick.
Nice post, i’m in the market for a good vacuum as well and this post and the comments have given me a lot of options and stuff to look into. thanks.
If you’re looking for the best vacuum cleaner on the planet, be sure to check out Oreck vacuum cleaners. i received one as a gift a few years ago and to this day it’s been the best vacuum cleaner i’ve ever used/seen. You can’t go wrong with an Oreck.
We bought a Bissel upright cannister vac model 5770with all the filters and attachments.
It “sucks” big time! It weighs a ton but it
sucks and cleans like theirs no tomorrow. Just quick click the cannister, dump it and rock and roll! No danged bags to replace!
We’ve had all kinds of vacs too, from top to bottom – ‘Don’t like the pull behind canninster vacs because you keep banging into things and have to replace the danged hoses every now and then and the bags. Whatever you buy, make sure you get enough belts, bags, and filters to last a while.
Great tips everyone. I am still a little torn though…I know I can’t wait too much longer though!
All I know about Vacuums is that Dyson is supposed to be the bomb. My step mom just bought one for $400…my god! Anyways it doesn’t have wheels, just a single ball it roll on …..weird!
This really scares me because I have the same vacume! Is this all I have to look forward to a vacume cleaner that doesn’t suck? literally, what a disappointment… happy to say I got mine at GoodWill for 10 bucks tho

I have a similar vacum by erukea and it picks up great. The only problem is the belt for brushes falls off alot anf i have to put it back on.
They all seem to go the same way sooner or later.
Simplicity and Riccar are solid american-made bagged vacuums by the same manufacturer, their top-end models are amazingly sucky, and have HEPA filters. You’ll be impressed. You can only get them at vacuum shops. I’ve also seen glowing reviews of the Sebo X series, as well as the Meile. I bought the lower end Simpicity because I couldn’t afford the top end models, but I’ve been satisfied. I have a small house — if I had twice the carpet I would definitely spend twice the money for the better vac. If you want a great vacuum cleaner you’ll be happy with for a long time, you’ll have to spend $700 and up. Let us know what you end up with!
Interesting stuff. I own aleaning co and all I know is that Dysons suck. ie are rubbish
I used to clean my room with a vacuum and it just made my back and head ached. It doesn’t sucks! So now I’m asking someone to clean for me. Less worries.=D
Honestly, I gave up using the vacuum cleaner a long time ago. It’s been well on the first few uses, but my room doesn’t end up the way I wanted it to be cleaned. It just seems that it’s doubling my work because I have to do the cleaning again. So, what’s the difference with this one?
