Weird Unusual Sports

Across the world there are lots of sports. Some people might think baseball or football or tennis are weird and unusual sports, but I think the ones I’ve shared below have to probably be some of the weirdest sports that anyone could find a little humor in.

Zorb Ball

According to the official website of the Zorb Ball, “Zorb is the sport of rolling down a hill inside a giant inflatable ball and where New Zealand once again leads the world in stupid things to do while you’re on a vacation.” I didn’t know that New Zealand was the leader in stupid things to do while on vacation, but this weird unusual sport looks like it might be fun.

Unicycle Hockey

Hockey and Unicycling together at last! And to think I thought ice hockey was challenging enough…

Wife Carrying

I couldn’t even believe this was a sport, but sure enough, there is a Wikipedia article about it. This sport involves men running through an obstacle course while carrying the wife as pictured above. The rules are as follows: All Participants Must Have Fun, Wife must weigh at least 49 kg (so it’s a good thing if the wife has a fat belly), 15 second penalty for dropping the wife, wife must wear helmet.  No, this doesn’t sound weird or unusual at all…

The World Pooh Sticks Championship

This weird unusual sport, named Pooh-Sticks from the popular stories Winnie the Pooh involves standing on a bridge, dropping your stick in the water, and racing to see who’s stick goes the fastest to produce a winner. Could be a fun way to spend a lazy afternoon this March… That’s if you can handle all of the excitement.

Shin Kicking

The object of this sport is to kick the other person’s shins until they’re so weak they fall down (or you can throw them down). Their motto: If it ain’t broke, you’re not kicking hard enough. According to the official Shin Kicking website, they’re petitioning to get this one in the Olympics.

Cat Fish Grabbers

According to Catfishgrabbers.com, this sport is the “art of fishing with your hands”. To get started, all you need is a swimsuit and the ability to wrestle in the water trying to get the catfish if possible. Have you hugged a catfish today?

Worm Charming

As the name suggests, worm charming involves trying to coax worms out of the ground. Whoever gets the most worms wins! Clearly this sport is all about strategy.

Tent Pitching

Think you can pitch a tent faster than anybody else? I didn’t believe this one was real either until checking it out on the BBC website. The World Tent Pitching competition is all about seeing who can set up a tent the fastest.

Extreme Ironing

Get out your iron and ironing board and try out this extreme sport: players go to a remote location and iron clothes! As the Wikipedia article states: Extreme ironing is “the latest danger sport that combines the thrills of an extreme outdoor activity with the satisfaction of a well-pressed shirt.” Sounds exhilarating, doesn’t it?

Know of any other weird and unusual sports? Have you played (or would you play) any of the strange sports I have listed here? Share your thoughts in the comments below.

I see the point to some of these like the wife carrying would be great training for if your house caught on fire. But the shin kicking I’m pretty sure has no purpose.

    Hilarious post! Thanks,

OK, I would definitely try Zorb Ball. It looks like a lot of fun although I do not know if I would consider it a sport. No offense for you Zorb Baller’s out there.

That Zorb Ball looks way fun! But there are tons of crazy sports out there. When I went to the Copper Canyon in Mexico, kids would take a stick and ball and run up 60 degree hills for miles and miles just to score 1 “goal”. It was amazing to watch because I don’t know very many people that could do that on flat ground, let alone up a steep mountain.

I have never heard about this kinds of sport before, some of them are very funny, especially I liked Worm Charming, I cant imagine people sitting on the ground and trying to coax worms.

i think most of it are being used as entertainment in the first place and not as sport.

I would prefer a wetsuit over a swimsuit if i was going to be a catfish grabber, who knows where those things might swim up.

The wife carrying gives the winner the weight of his wife in beer. So atleast they win more than a trophy. I guess the man tells the wife she can use the money he would spend on the beer instead. I know it would be hard to get your wife to be carried through mud, water and much more so she must get something out of it.

  23. Posted March 5, 2009 at 4:07 pm | Permalink

Lol…I would have never guessed at most of those. Zorb ball looks like the only decent one, and maybe kinda fun…come on, you’re in a giant inflatable ball rolling down a hill…what’s not to like…except maybe the nauseating feeling that comes after.

Sport is an activity that is governed by a set of rules or customs and often engaged in competitively. Sports commonly refer to activities where the physical capabilities of the competitor are the sole or primary determinant of the outcome (winning or losing), but the term is also used to include activities such as mind sports (a common name for some card games and board games with little to no element of chance) and motor sports where mental acuity or equipment quality are major factors. Sport is commonly defined as an organized, competitive and skillful physical activity requiring commitment and fair play. Some view sports as differing from games based on the fact that there are usually higher levels of organization and profit (not always monetary) involved in sports. Accurate records are kept and updated for most sports at the highest levels, while failures and accomplishments are widely announced in sport news.

Here’s an usual sport I like: kabaddi. It is from ancient India. Players have to raid oppositions half, th ewhole time while holding their breath. To prove it he continually chants a word (in the Indian form of the game they chant “kabaddi”, hence the name).

are these for real? anyway, the zorb ball and the unicycle hockey caught my attention. I think it’s very interesting and very fun, I am not gonna take it as sports but just an outdoor games. I think I will try one of those in one of our outdoor activities. thanks for posting this, I now have an idea of having a fun summer…

That shin-kicking thing goes to show that there is something mentally wrong with some humans. The unicycle hockey on the other hand looks like fun. I just need to learn to ride a unicycle and I’ll be ready to go.

I think these are some community sport or activities. In our place, we also have some native sports like Buffalo racing, climbing a bamboo pole that’s field with grease and catching a piglet in a mud pool. And for some, it may be weird.
